Yet more reasons our legal system needs an overhaul..

To get rid of ridiculous lawsuits like this one.  And this one.

Great news..

The leader of al-Qaida in Iraq is captured.

You know what bugs me the most about these "leaders" they have (aside from the obvious things, like killing innocent civilians and such)?  They go out like b!tches when they get caught.  They convince their followers what an honor it is to blow up infidels (and women and children) for the good of jihad and Allah, yet when those leaders are confronted with capture, they don't practice what they preach.  Saddam was pulled out of a "spider hole".  This guy was captured, and admitted who he was almost immediately.  At lease Saddam's boys, Uday and Qusay, went out ala Butch and Sundance, guns blazing.

In a part of the world where cowardice isn't taken likely, I wonder what the insurgent on the street thinks when he hears his boss went down without a fight.

Finally, something useful from the NYTimes..

They put together a easy-to-use visual representation of what it will take for Hillary! or Obama to win the nomination.

I would have expected to see this in Kentucky, not Chicago..

But I'm not overly surprised at the same time.

Two viewpoints on the same event..

The topic is Eight Belles, the filly that broke both her front legs at the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.  She had run the race to near-perfection, coming in second, beating all but one of "the boys".  On the backstretch, during the cool down lap, she stumbled and went down.  Medical staff was out to her in an instant, saw her condition, and put her down.

Things change in an instant.

How is a situation like this to be properly handled?  On the one hand, you have a horse, Big Brown, that jusr decimated the field, and have people naturally looking forward to a potential Triple Crown.  On the other, you have the tragedy of a beautiful animal being destroyed on the same track where others are celebrating.  People are wanting to know what happened to Eight Belles, but you don't want that to become the story, if you are NBC.

Read the following articles, and decide which writer had the better take on the death of Eight Belles.

Mike Lopresti has this one, and  Gregg Doyel has this one.

Great weekend..

A quick recap of the weekend events at WAMK World HQ.  Sunday marked the 41st anniversary of my birth, so Friday at 5:00 marked the official beginning of Birthday Weekend.  It started off with a lovely rendition of "Happy Birthday, Daddy" sung by my beautiful daughter.  Nothing makes for a better moment, than to see your young child with a big grin on her face, singing to you.

We whisked over to Geno and Mrs. Geno's new digs (they moved a few days ago), helped them resolve a few furniture-moving issues, got the computer up and running (now Geno can get his daily does of WAMK!), got the cable all squared away, and relaxed for a bit.  Then we picked up a bite at Pei Wei, and back to the house.

Saturday was great, thanks to Max (one of the WAMK watchdogs) letting me sleep in.  He generally starts making noises for breakfast around 4:15 every morning.  Clearly he knew it was my birthday, and he let me sleep til after 8:00.  Good dog.  I was awakened by another rousing redition of "Happy Birthday, Daddy" from Madeline, and we all hung out in bed, and watched some TV.  We got dressed, and headed to the Denver Diner, one of my all-time favorite greasy spoon restaurants.  When I used to live downtown, my old neighbor and I used to hit that place at least once a week.  It's been about a year since we last stopped in, and the place hasn't changed a bit.  Most of the staff is the same since I first started going there, had the same delicious country fried steak and eggs as always, and throughly enjoyed myself.  We headed back home, dropped off the girls, and I made my way to my second home to pick up a few things, including this gorgeous piece of machinery:

My girls got me a new mower, a sweet Toro ride with high-wheels, front-wheel drive, and a swanky hose attachment that allows me to hose off the underside without getting wet.  Needless to say, I broke it in on the grass on the WAMK Estate.  Easy to start, easy to use, and much quieter than the old clunker it replaced.  Got a call from JDJ (who had just finished a 10k in the cool pines of Prescott, AZ).  We watched the Kentucky Derby, as we do every year, and went from excited to sad, as Eight Belles went down after the race.  Kudos to NBC to not show the horse suffering, by the way.  Mr and Mrs Geno joined us for dinner, and wonderful flank steak that the fetching Mrs. P had marinated all day.  I popped it on the grill, and we enjoyed it along with a few glasses of wine.  The evening was capped off with a delicious ice-cream cake (with Madeline helping to blow out the candle!).

Sunday morning found a few messages on the voice mail: birthday greetings from my folks in AZ, a song from GWK (world-renowned, by the way!), a message from an old co-worker, a text message from an old roommate.  We had breakfast, then went over to a local park to get Madeline's pictures taken.  She had a fun time, running around while the photographer did her thing.  We got a ton of cute pics, which I'll share soon.  Back to the house, where I spent the afternoon installing a solar-powered motion detector light on my shed (some punk had the guts to come over my fence in the dead of night last week, and help himself to my old weedeater). Later in the afternoon, we headed out to Morrison to my favorite Mexican restaurant for some birthday margaritas and food.

A great weekend, a great birthday, and wonderful weather.  Now it's back out on the road (Houston for a few days), and the countdown til next year!

I can't wait for the Convention this Summer..

Mike Rosen takes a peek at "Operation Chaos"..

On a side note, I will be wandering around Downtown, camera in hand, to share the Convention with WAMK readers.

Nice question on the issues, Leftie!

Some guy in Iowa wanted to embarass McCain, and get on the news.  Looks like McCain handled it well, and moved on.

PARRISH: This question goes to mental health and mental health care. Previously, I’ve been married to a woman that was verbally abusive to me. Is it true that you called your wife a (expletive)?

MCCAIN: Now, now. You don’t want to … Um, you know that’s the great thing about town hall meetings, sir, but we really don’t, there’s people here who don’t respect that kind of language. So I’ll move on to the next questioner in the back.

The audience gasped at the question and applauded at McCain’s handling of it. Parrish was escorted from the event and questioned by Secret Service, but not charged. Parrish had checked in to the event as a member of the press.

Parrish, a 45-year-old Baptist minister and technology business owner, said he attended the event specifically to confront McCain about the rumor.

“This is about character,” Parrish said, when reached by telephone afterward. “And in a moment of intemperance, he called his wife the most despicable name a person can call a woman.

The guy turns out to be a Biden supporter, and angry that McCain isn't getting the same treatment as Obama did with Rev. Wright.  Once again, the blogosphere does some digging, and finds out more information than the MSM.  It's not that hard, MSM, the guy has a freaking web page!  Imagine for a second if the roles were reversed, and it was a Republican operative asking a question like this of a Democratic candidate.  Think that person's political leanings would be discussed in the body of the article?

Me too.

Who's next?

Detroit puts an old school beat-down on Colorado, winning Game Four in a rout.  Johan Franzen shows the Av's how it's done, getting his second hat trick of the Series (for those of you in Tucson, a "hat trick" is when a player scores three goals in one game).  Franzen now has 11 goals in the postseason.  In a positive note for Colorado, Jose Theodore only gave up three goals in this game before getting yanked.

Detroit Red Wings center Johan Franzen, right, of Sweden celebrates his hat trick goal as Colorado Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj slumps in the net during the second period in Game 4 of an NHL Western Conference semifinal hockey playoff series in Denver, Thursday, May 1, 2008.
