The topic is Eight Belles, the filly that broke both her front legs at the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. She had run the race to near-perfection, coming in second, beating all but one of "the boys". On the backstretch, during the cool down lap, she stumbled and went down. Medical staff was out to her in an instant, saw her condition, and put her down.
Things change in an instant.
How is a situation like this to be properly handled? On the one hand, you have a horse, Big Brown, that jusr decimated the field, and have people naturally looking forward to a potential Triple Crown. On the other, you have the tragedy of a beautiful animal being destroyed on the same track where others are celebrating. People are wanting to know what happened to Eight Belles, but you don't want that to become the story, if you are NBC.
