Hard morning to be a parent..

So we had an appointment with the dentist for the Little Duper.  She's a big fan of milk (like downing gallons of it each day, it seems), which I think has translated into her amazing height.  The kid is barely 2 1/2, and she's just under 39 inches tall.  She towers over the other kids her age, as well as the kids older than her.  I'm betting she's gonna be a six-footer for sure.  Anyway, she drinks milk at night, which we found out is a no-no, as it's bad to have that on her teeth overnight.

So Duper had an appointment to have the dentist fix her teeth.  She also has a little gap in between her front chompers, with a "flap" of skin that needed removing.  So we figured we get that all done at once.  Her dentist has a supe neat office for kids.  It's very jungle-like, with stuffed animals everywhere, and random animal noises coming from hidden speakers in the walls.  Much cooler than any dentist office I ever went into as a kid, let me tell you.

They got her all ready to go for her procedure, which consisted of her downing a little "shot" of medicine that would help her to forget her visit there, followed by some novacaine (or whatever it is they use for numbing these days).  The office has a flat panel TV screen above the chair, and she got to watch "Finding Nemo" while they worked on her.  The dentist told us to try and not speak, as hearing our voices might pull her out of her "fog" that they had induced.  She's not a big fan of being held down, of having her head played with, but she did ok with that.  Everything went about as I expected, with her being more scared and unsure of what was happening.  When they got to the "flap", she needed a second shot of novacaine, and was crying out "Daddy!  Daddy!"  Let me tell you, I've done a lot of hard things in my life, and have had some bad injuries myself.

Nothing compares to hearing your baby girl crying out for you, and you can't do anything about it to make the pain go away.

The dentist finished up, and we finally got to talk to her, and to hold her.  She did great, will feel much better, and it's all behind us.  We came home, lounged on the couch, and Mr. and Mrs. Geno came over to help out.  She's now sleeping, finally.  Hopefully she wakes up with no memory of what happened, and a happy mouth.  The fetching Mrs. P did a great job keeping a stiff upper lip, and was very brave as her little girl was getting worked on.  Well done, Mom!

Great weekend..

A quick recap of the weekend events at WAMK World HQ.  Sunday marked the 41st anniversary of my birth, so Friday at 5:00 marked the official beginning of Birthday Weekend.  It started off with a lovely rendition of "Happy Birthday, Daddy" sung by my beautiful daughter.  Nothing makes for a better moment, than to see your young child with a big grin on her face, singing to you.

We whisked over to Geno and Mrs. Geno's new digs (they moved a few days ago), helped them resolve a few furniture-moving issues, got the computer up and running (now Geno can get his daily does of WAMK!), got the cable all squared away, and relaxed for a bit.  Then we picked up a bite at Pei Wei, and back to the house.

Saturday was great, thanks to Max (one of the WAMK watchdogs) letting me sleep in.  He generally starts making noises for breakfast around 4:15 every morning.  Clearly he knew it was my birthday, and he let me sleep til after 8:00.  Good dog.  I was awakened by another rousing redition of "Happy Birthday, Daddy" from Madeline, and we all hung out in bed, and watched some TV.  We got dressed, and headed to the Denver Diner, one of my all-time favorite greasy spoon restaurants.  When I used to live downtown, my old neighbor and I used to hit that place at least once a week.  It's been about a year since we last stopped in, and the place hasn't changed a bit.  Most of the staff is the same since I first started going there, had the same delicious country fried steak and eggs as always, and throughly enjoyed myself.  We headed back home, dropped off the girls, and I made my way to my second home to pick up a few things, including this gorgeous piece of machinery:

My girls got me a new mower, a sweet Toro ride with high-wheels, front-wheel drive, and a swanky hose attachment that allows me to hose off the underside without getting wet.  Needless to say, I broke it in on the grass on the WAMK Estate.  Easy to start, easy to use, and much quieter than the old clunker it replaced.  Got a call from JDJ (who had just finished a 10k in the cool pines of Prescott, AZ).  We watched the Kentucky Derby, as we do every year, and went from excited to sad, as Eight Belles went down after the race.  Kudos to NBC to not show the horse suffering, by the way.  Mr and Mrs Geno joined us for dinner, and wonderful flank steak that the fetching Mrs. P had marinated all day.  I popped it on the grill, and we enjoyed it along with a few glasses of wine.  The evening was capped off with a delicious ice-cream cake (with Madeline helping to blow out the candle!).

Sunday morning found a few messages on the voice mail: birthday greetings from my folks in AZ, a song from GWK (world-renowned, by the way!), a message from an old co-worker, a text message from an old roommate.  We had breakfast, then went over to a local park to get Madeline's pictures taken.  She had a fun time, running around while the photographer did her thing.  We got a ton of cute pics, which I'll share soon.  Back to the house, where I spent the afternoon installing a solar-powered motion detector light on my shed (some punk had the guts to come over my fence in the dead of night last week, and help himself to my old weedeater). Later in the afternoon, we headed out to Morrison to my favorite Mexican restaurant for some birthday margaritas and food.

A great weekend, a great birthday, and wonderful weather.  Now it's back out on the road (Houston for a few days), and the countdown til next year!

Looks like it's time for "The talk" with my daughter..

You know, the one where the fetching Mrs. P and I decide which gang we want her to join?

A couple arguing about which gang their 4-year-old toddler should join caused a public disturbance that resulted in the father's arrest, Commerce City police said Thursday, reported KMGH-TV in Denver.

His girlfriend told police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to. The teen mother, who is black, told authorities she is a member of the Crips, police said. Manzanares is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman told police.

"They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised. Basically, she said they cannot agree on which gang the baby would 'claim,'" Sandoval said.

Upgrades to WAMK World Headquarters

With all the success here at WAMK World HQ (not to mention "drop in" visitors like AmeriDan), we've had to add on more staff, making the palatial HQ feel a little cramped.  I recently decided to move my secretary to a more private location, so she can answer the constantly ringing phones without so many distractions.

I thought I'd share the ordeal of constructing her new workspace with the readers.

Here is the beginning of the construction project.  I've gotten the foundation finished, and have added the floor, and the back wall.  My secretary stopped by, to make sure the project was on time, and on budget.  She also brought a few of her advisors along, which can be seen sitting next to her:

This next photo shows the full crew hard at work.  Geno showed up to lend his expertise, and my secretary brought along one of her watchdogs.  As you can see, progress is good in this picture.

You can see my secretary barking orders at Geno to work faster.  We've got the whole place framed and are ready for the roofing to begin.  I don't know why she was so fired up to get things done!

Here we see the construction crew getting closer to the end.  It's starting to look like something now!

A few more shingles on the rooftop, and we'll be ready to hand over the keys.

Looks like we are ready for occupancy!

I hope he didn't leave the seat up before she sat down..

Authorities are considering charges in the bizarre case of a woman who sat on her boyfriend's toilet for two years — so long that her body was stuck to the seat by the time the boyfriend finally called police.

I love my brother, but..

I'm not gonna carry his carcass on a plane when he croaks.  Or use frequent flyer miles on his ticket, for that matter.

Too bad I didn't see this story before going on vacation..

We could have enjoyed a family outing on a bench in La Jolla.

Yes, I said "bench" and not "beach"..

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack..

What a great week.

I got back this evening after a blissful seven days in San Diego.  The fetching Mrs. P, the little Duper and I set off last Saturday at midday, and got back to the Mile High City late this evening.  Over the course of the last week we enjoyed beautiful weather, great food and drink, the magnificent San Diego Zoo, watched seals (and several new "pups") frolick on the beach in La Jolla, spent countless trips with Madeline on the merry-go-round at Belmont Park (the panda bear and bunny rabbit being the animals of choice to ride), managed to take in a few turns on the old-school wooden roller coaster myself, made a few stops at In-and-Out Burger, and got in some much needed relaxation.

Pictures to come soon!

Vacation!

WAMK will be dark for a few days, as we make the trek to beautiful San Diego.  I'll be enjoying a relaxing week with my toes in the sand on the beautiful sands of Mission Beach with the fetching Mrs. P and the little Duper.  The little one has been talking all week about how she is going to find little seashells, play in the water, and go to the zoo.

The laptop will be staying at home, and I'll leave it up to you folks to keep things interesting around here..
