John Boyd and the "OODA Loop"

If you have a few moments, please take the time and read this essay by the great Bill Whittle.  There are two parts, just follow the link to get the whole piece.  The OODA Loop refers to a strategy devised by a pilot named John Boyd.  It stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.  You then continue to run through the loop as you learn more information.  Whittle has applied lessons learned from Boyd to how our military is succeeding on the ground now, and what we'll have to do to stay successful in the future.

Wings up 2-0 on Nashville..

The Wings beat Nashville 4-2 to take a 2-0 lead in their first round playoff series.  Darren McCarty scored the first goal (a victory all to itself that McCarty is even in a Red Wings uniform), bringing Joe Louis to its feet.  Two more wins, and on to Round Two!

A post for Piker..

In the comments section of one of my posts, Piker and I were discussing how the battle between Hillary! and Obama were affecting the Democratic voters.

I wrote that there have been several polls that have shown that if Hillary! wins the nomination, some Obama supporters will not vote for her, and some Clinton supporters will not vote for Obama should he win the nomination.  This piece looks inside the numbers, and offers some suggestions why.

One in five supporters of Mrs. Clinton here say they won't vote for Mr. Obama should their candidate lose (and vice versa, according to pollster Terry Madonna of Franklin & Marshall College). Only 12% of nonwhite Pennsylvania voters support Mrs. Clinton. Only 29% of white ones support Mr. Obama. Gender and age cohorts break along similarly sharp lines, with women and older voters going for Mrs. Clinton, men and young voters trending toward Mr. Obama.

Though others might pick a different starting point, I'd trace the start of that process to 1968 Chicago, where antiwar protestors rioted outside of the party's national convention and party leaders inside responded by creating the McGovern-Fraser commission. That commission went on to write presidential nomination rules establishing delegate quotas based on age, race and gender. State parties followed suit by structuring caucuses to favor organized activist groups such as unions.

And so now Pennsylvania Democrats, like their brethren around the country, are splitting along race, age, gender and geographical lines as they are forced to choose between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama. But then, why shouldn't they? Democratic voters are just doing what they've been trained to do – thinking of themselves in group terms.

Man of the people?

Not so much.  You know how Al Franken used to be on the radio, blasting Corporate America for it's greed, and ignoring the little guy?  Turns out Mr. Franken neglected to pay workers compensation insurance for his employees.  For three years.

Whoops.

So Franken finally admits there was an *ahem* oversight, and agreed to pay $25,000.  Of course, it took the State of New York three years to get that money.  Background is here.  Franken claimed that the "oversight" happened because he had moved to Minnesota, and the letters were sent to his old address in New York.  I guess the New York post offices don't know about change of address cards, or how to use a collections agency.  But this little bit of information shows that Franken has been keeping in touch with his former Harvard buddies, and used the same address (to get donations to his campaign) that the State of New York used to try and collect the money they won in court.

So to recap, here's what we know:  Al Franken didn't pay his workers comp insurance for his employees.  When the State of New York found out, Franken still didn't pay.  The State of New York took him to court, and won.  Franken still didn't pay the judgement for three years, claiming he never got the "bill" from the State for the judgement.  Franken also said he no longer lived at the New York address, yet used that same address to solicit donations from former Harvard schoolmates.

Perhaps Al needs to write a few new chapters for his book?

It may get more expensive to drink beer in California soon..

If this Democrat (surprise!) gets his way with a proposed tax hike:

The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That's an increase of about 1,500 percent.

Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.

"The people who use alcohol should pay for part of the cost to society, just like we've accepted that concept with tobacco," Beall said.

Looks like it's time for "The talk" with my daughter..

You know, the one where the fetching Mrs. P and I decide which gang we want her to join?

A couple arguing about which gang their 4-year-old toddler should join caused a public disturbance that resulted in the father's arrest, Commerce City police said Thursday, reported KMGH-TV in Denver.

His girlfriend told police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to. The teen mother, who is black, told authorities she is a member of the Crips, police said. Manzanares is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman told police.

"They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised. Basically, she said they cannot agree on which gang the baby would 'claim,'" Sandoval said.

Have dinner plans yet?

Perhaps you can try out this restaurant:

Not really sure what happens if you need to use the restroom.  I guess you "go" before you take off?

Looks like that suspension is going to last a little longer..

Last week I posted that Air America host Randi Rhodes was suspended for some over-the-top comments about Hillary! and Geraldine Ferraro.  Looks like she is no longer at Air America, and will begin working for the station that she had made her controversial appearance for.  Enjoy, San Francisco!

No mention on her website as of yet.

Now it appears that she resigned last night.  Someone is missing from this lineup of shows as well.

Compare and contrast..

Can you imagine the fallout if the painting in question depicted a certain Muslim, instead of the Last Supper?
