Hard morning to be a parent..

So we had an appointment with the dentist for the Little Duper.  She's a big fan of milk (like downing gallons of it each day, it seems), which I think has translated into her amazing height.  The kid is barely 2 1/2, and she's just under 39 inches tall.  She towers over the other kids her age, as well as the kids older than her.  I'm betting she's gonna be a six-footer for sure.  Anyway, she drinks milk at night, which we found out is a no-no, as it's bad to have that on her teeth overnight.

So Duper had an appointment to have the dentist fix her teeth.  She also has a little gap in between her front chompers, with a "flap" of skin that needed removing.  So we figured we get that all done at once.  Her dentist has a supe neat office for kids.  It's very jungle-like, with stuffed animals everywhere, and random animal noises coming from hidden speakers in the walls.  Much cooler than any dentist office I ever went into as a kid, let me tell you.

They got her all ready to go for her procedure, which consisted of her downing a little "shot" of medicine that would help her to forget her visit there, followed by some novacaine (or whatever it is they use for numbing these days).  The office has a flat panel TV screen above the chair, and she got to watch "Finding Nemo" while they worked on her.  The dentist told us to try and not speak, as hearing our voices might pull her out of her "fog" that they had induced.  She's not a big fan of being held down, of having her head played with, but she did ok with that.  Everything went about as I expected, with her being more scared and unsure of what was happening.  When they got to the "flap", she needed a second shot of novacaine, and was crying out "Daddy!  Daddy!"  Let me tell you, I've done a lot of hard things in my life, and have had some bad injuries myself.

Nothing compares to hearing your baby girl crying out for you, and you can't do anything about it to make the pain go away.

The dentist finished up, and we finally got to talk to her, and to hold her.  She did great, will feel much better, and it's all behind us.  We came home, lounged on the couch, and Mr. and Mrs. Geno came over to help out.  She's now sleeping, finally.  Hopefully she wakes up with no memory of what happened, and a happy mouth.  The fetching Mrs. P did a great job keeping a stiff upper lip, and was very brave as her little girl was getting worked on.  Well done, Mom!

Hey, whatever happened to that Civil War thing in Iraq, anyway?

You know how I know there are good things happening in Iraq?  Because you don't hear of bad things happening in Iraq.  And how about it, NBC?  Is there still a Civil War going on?

Make your voice heard..

Michelle Malkin has a link to Senator Inhofe's office-he is sending another "No Amnesty" letter to Harry Reid.  If you are worried about immigration, it's worth a look, and an email.

May 20, 2008

The Honorable Harry Reid
Majority Leader
United States Senate
Washington D.C. 20510

Dear Majority Leader Reid:

We write to express disappointment that the Senate Appropriations Committee chose to include in the War Supplemental more than 100 pages of immigration language that would grant legal status to more than one million illegal alien agricultural workers and their families. We urge you to remove these controversial provisions from the bill so we can enact essential funding for our troops without delay. If these provisions remain in the bill, you can expect a vigorous debate on immigration policy.

Sincerely,

Jim Inhofe, United States Senate

Can you top three in a row?

Thanks to GWK for yet another time waster.  I can't get more than two in a row, but GWK claims to have made three.  Your best?

+++UPDATE+++

I have now made three.

Make that four.  I rule.

"Settled science"?

You may have heard earlier this month that global warming is now likely to take break for a decade or more. There will be no more warming until 2015, perhaps later.

Climate scientist Noel Keenlyside, leading a team from Germany's Leibniz Institute of Marine Science and the Max Planck Institute of Meteorology, for the first time entered verifiable data on ocean circulation cycles into one of the U. N.'s climate supercomputers, and the machine spit out a projection that there will be no more warming for the foreseeable future.

Dedication..

You have to give this photographer credit.  He's out there, doing his job, snapping photos at a high school track meet, when a javelin hits his lower leg, and sticks.  The photographer (a former Marine, by the way) didn't freak out, and managed to snap this picture

Isn't this a slippery slope?

Sarasota County in Florida is not hiring any smokers.  The Administrator of Sarasota County says the hiring ban is designed to "produce a healthier work force and manage our long-term healthcare costs".  On its face, the new policy sounds like a good idea.  But it makes me wonder about a few things.

The article says that new employees are required to take a nicotine drug test, and sign a pledge that they haven't smoked in the last 12 months.  Let's say that a new hire passes the test, and signs the pledge.  Then the Super Bowl rolls around, and that employee is at the local watering hole, enjoying a few adult beverages.  I know many people that aren't "regular" smokers, but enjoy one or two with a cocktail.  Say that employee is one of those people, and is observed having a cigarette with his buddies during the game by his supervisor.  Can that employee be fired?  What if an employee was a non-smoker before she was hired, but becomes a smoker after she begins working there?

What other medical conditions will the County go after next, in the name of reducing healthcare costs?  Diabetes kills more people each year than cancer and heart disease.  It's also a very expensive disease to treat, with supplies, eye problems, foot problems, and conditions associated with obesity.  Wouldn't it make sense to not hire diabetics, based on the same logic Sarasota County is applying to smokers?

Where does it end?

Hey, hey, Hockeytown!

The Red Wings got it done, beating Dallas 4-1 in Game Six to head back to the Stanley Cup Finals for the fourth time in eleven years.  The Wings will be looking for their 11th Stanley Cup.  Draper scored a goal with his face, the Wings skated great, Zetterberg gets a shorthanded goal, and Ozzie stood on his head in the final period to seal the deal.

Help me out here..

So we are supposed to switch to CFL light bulbs to save the environment.  It's no secret that the mecury in the CFL's poses a health/disposal hazard, which the same people who are making us switch are being slow to address.  Here's the part where I get even more confused.  The EPA is now suggesting to wrap the spent/broken CFL's in two plastic bags:

Some states have made it illegal to throw CFLs in the garbage, while other states advise residents to seal a burned-out or broken CFL in two plastic bags if they are going to dispose of it in their regular trash.

What are we supposed to do in Colorado, where the Lefties are now trying to outlaw plastic bags?

Impressive.

I'll give credit where credit is due.  Getting 60,000+ to show up on a weekend for a speech is nothing to sneeze at.  Granted, it was in a Liberal hotbed, but nonetheless, that many people attending an event is impressive.  Well done, Senator.
