Another day..

Another hat trick.  From a different Red Wing, this time.  Pavel Datsyuk gets three goals in tonights game, a 5-2 Detroit victory.  It was a "must win" for the Stars, who now are looking at a 3-0 deficit.  Detroit has now won nine in a row, best in the NHL postseason since 1993.  Game Four is in Dallas on Wednesday.

Detroit Red Wings' Pavel Datsyuk, left, of Russia, scores a goal against Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco during the first period of Game 3 of the NHL Western Conference hockey finals in Dallas, Monday, May 12, 2008.

Amazing story!

Found this in my inbox today, courtesy of GWK:

In 1986, Dan Harrison was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University.

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Dan approached it very carefully.

He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Dan worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.

Dan stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.

Dan never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Dan was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son.

As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Dan and his son Dan Jr. were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Dan, lifted its front foot off the ground, and then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Dan couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Dan summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Dan's legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

Time to look more closely at nuclear power?

Like many others, my view of nuclear energy is clouded by the movie "The China Syndrome".  As I recall, the movie came out, and then not to soon after, the accident at Three Mile Island happened, giving immediate credibility to the dangers than can happen.  But the French have been using nuclear power for decades, and there has been no "China Syndrome" over there.  The French now cite the export of nuclear electricty as #3, behind only wine and ag products.  Shouldn't we be embracing this technology?

Think this guy will get some grief in a locker room soon?

Me too.  Thanks to Riles (who ran a nice duathlon this weekend, by the way!) for the link.

Kiss procedures like this one goodbye..

Assuming of course, that Universal Healthcare comes into play.  Procedures, techniques, and the instruments developed will not happen without a free market.  Government meddling stiffles innovation.

Think you've had a bad day?

Check out this poor dude.  He gets in a crash in his driveway.  Gets airlifted to the hospital.  House catches fire, and burns down.  And then he gets a ticket for the traffic violation.  Maybe today will be a tad better for him.

Different team, same result..

The Red Wings put a whuppin' on Dallas in Game One, winning 4-1.  At least a certain goalie in Colorado can sleep easier, knowing he's not the only guy in net that gives up four per game.  Dallas showed up for Game Two, but still lost 2-1.  Detroit tried to make it more of a contest for the Stars, as they sat All-Playoff stud Johan Franzen (he had concussion-like symptoms.  Maybe his head hurt, trying to add up all the goals he's scored in the last month?).  Game Three is tonight, Franzen will sit this one out as well (interestingly, a certain Stars player, who lost his composure, and swung a two-hander at Detroit goalie Chris Osgood after the game on Saturday will be in the lineup).

How good are the Wings this series?  They have lead 105.07 of the 120 minutes played, and been tied for 14.53.  For readers in Tucson, that means that Dallas has had the lead for not quite a minute.  In two games.  History doesn't look good for the Stars.

Sorry it's been a little light on posts for the last few days.  Work had me down in Houston, and I was running pretty much all day, so there was little time to blog.  I'll try to make it up to you today!

Great news..

The leader of al-Qaida in Iraq is captured.

You know what bugs me the most about these "leaders" they have (aside from the obvious things, like killing innocent civilians and such)?  They go out like b!tches when they get caught.  They convince their followers what an honor it is to blow up infidels (and women and children) for the good of jihad and Allah, yet when those leaders are confronted with capture, they don't practice what they preach.  Saddam was pulled out of a "spider hole".  This guy was captured, and admitted who he was almost immediately.  At lease Saddam's boys, Uday and Qusay, went out ala Butch and Sundance, guns blazing.

In a part of the world where cowardice isn't taken likely, I wonder what the insurgent on the street thinks when he hears his boss went down without a fight.
